How to Replace Basin Taps in Five Easy Steps

Bathroom fixtures can instantly transform the appearance and feel of your bathroom. We have provided instructions on how to replace bathroom basin taps, whether you are looking for an upgrade or a complete replacement.

Bathroom basins usually come with an installation manual that you can refer back to. This guide will show you how to change an old basin tap into a new one in just five steps.

1. Turn off your water.

You must first make sure your mains water supply has been turned off for cold and hot taps. Next, ensure that all hot and cold taps are turned off to allow water to drain from the home.

Clear everything under the sink. This will allow you to work more efficiently and give you more space. To catch drips, place a tray or bucket under the tap.

2. Get rid of your old tap.

To catch spillages, you can place a towel on the floor or under the basin. You will need to unscrew the nut that connects your basin to the original tap. Two adjustable wrenches may be needed if your tap is fitted with compression fittings. This can be removed and the old tap can be pulled out.

3. Install your new tap.

Attach the threaded pin to the tap and then feed the thread into the basin hole. Your tap will now sit on top of the basin with the thread sticking out below. To ensure that the tap fits snugly, you may need a washer. Now, screw the nut securely onto the threaded pin.

After your tap has been secured to the basin, the hot/cold pipes will feed from your wall directly to your new pipes. Make sure to inspect everything for leaks or loose connections.

4. Connect your plumbing.

Connect the flexible connectors to your tap. Connect them to your copper domestic pipes with a compression fitting between. This will regulate and keep the pressure between the pipes safe.

5. Restart your water supply.

You can now turn on the mains water supply. Your new tap could be damaged if it is set to 'closed" when air flows through. After turning on the water supply, it is recommended that all taps are left 'open' for at least a few minutes. Keep in mind that other taps may be open in your home, so make sure to turn them off when water is back on.
